Just where exactly are the lost ten tribes?

Today's gospel study is D&C 133:26-34 which has to do with the return of the lost Ten Tribes in the Last Days. I have always wondered from where they will return. Where exactly are the 'North Countries' on this earth? After much study I have come to the conclusion that the Ten Tribes are no longer on this planet and have not been for thousands of years. I don't think I am the first to reach this conclusion. I have heard this many times over the years but never had a source until today. First the scripture:

"And they who are in the north countries shall come in remembrance before the Lord; and their prophets shall hear his voice, and shall no longer stay themselves; and they shall smite the rocks, and the ice shall flow down at their presence. And an highway shall be cast up in the midst of the great deep. Their enemies shall become a prey unto them, And in the barren deserts there shall come forth pools of living water; and the parched ground shall no longer be a thirsty land.

"And they shall bring forth their rich treasures unto the children of Ephraim, my servants. And the boundaries of the everlasting hills shall tremble at their presence. And there shall they fall down and be crowned with glory, even in Zion, by the hands of the servants of the Lord, even the children of Ephraim. And they shall be filled with songs of everlasting joy. Behold, this is the blessing of the everlasting God upon the tribes of Israel, and the richer blessing upon the head of Ephraim and his fellows."

In connection with these wonderful prophetic verses, I today came across the following quote which is attributed to Joseph Smith. In it he clearly states that a planet will come alongside the earth, overtake it and then position itself in a stationary location over the north pole of the earth. At that point, there will be some sort of joining mechanism between the two planets, causing a highway to be established between them. Over this highway will come the Ten Tribes.

Can you imagine what will happen to the waters of the earth with the attraction of another planet over the North pole? I would hate to live North of any large body of water at that point. Think about it. There will be a worldwide catastrophic inundation as the water from the equatorial regions suddenly rushes to the Northern polar region. Imagine the water in the Gulf of Mexico. Where will it go? How about the water in the Mediterranean? Think of the great devastation that will cause as it travels Northward at a frightening speed.

Here is the quote:

"Now let me ask you what would cause the Everlasting Hills to tremble with more violence than the coming together of two planets? Scientists will tell you that it is not scientific: that two planets coming together would be disastrous to both; but, when two planets or other objects are traveling in the same direction and one of them with a little greater velocity than the other, it would not be disastrous, because the one traveling faster would overtake the other.

"And relative to the Great Highway which should be cast up when the planet returns to its place in the great Northern Waters, it will form a highway and waters will recede and roll back. Now as to their coming back from the Northern Waters; they will return from the north because their planet will return to the place from whence it was taken. When this planet returns it will make the earth that much heavier, and it will then revolve slower."

Source: The Last Days by Robert W. Smith, Pyramid Press, Salt Lake City Utah, 1947, p.130. The story took place at the home of Bishop Benjamin Brown in Nauvoo in 1843 or 1844. It was related to his son, Patriarch Homer M. Brown of the Granite Utah Stake. Although it is not a firsthand account, it is consistent with other statements like this recorded by Orson Pratt and Parley Pratt, quoted in a previous post. They all stated that this was taught by Joseph Smith.

See also Hymns, 1891, no. 322:

"Thou, earth, wast once a glorious sphere
of noble magnitude,
And didst with majesty appear,
among the worlds of God.

"But thy dimensions have been torn
asunder, piece by piece,
And each dismembered fragment borne
abroad to distant space.

"When Enoch could no longer stay
amid corruption here,
Part of thyself was borne away
to form another sphere.

"That portion where his city stood
he gained by right approved;
And nearer to the throne of God
his planet upward moved.

"And when the Lord saw fit to hide
the "ten lost tribes" away,
Thou, earth, was severed to provide
the orb on which they stay.

"And thus, from time to time thy size
has been diminished, till
Thou seemest the law of sacrifice
created to fulfil....

"When Satan's hosts are overcome,
the martyred, princely race
Will claim thee, their celestial home
—their royal dwelling-place.

"A 'restitution' yet must come,
that will to thee restore,
By that grand law of worlds,
thy sum of matter heretofore.

"And thou, O earth, will leave the track
Thou hast been doomed to trace;
The Gods with shouts will bring thee back
To fill thy native place."

I think that hymn was taken out of the hymn book in 1912 for a reason. I think that a lot of the 10 tribes are still on the earth, in the northern countries like the Baltic States, Scandinavia, northern Asia, etc. I think the whole "seperate planet" theory is kind of far-fetched, and there isn't a whole lot of valid evidence to back it up.

More plasma theology. Great stuff! You ought to check out Rodney M. Cluff's stuff, too, concerning the lost tribes.

Thank you Tim/Mr.Gary for your posts. I have since a child known and pondered the words of that hymn. I have written you once before about a repeating dream/vision I had had that led me to search out the meaning of some disturbing and very odd images. This is how I found out for the first time of stories regarding "planet x" and the potential of a large solar system body with a huge elliptical orbit. That our sun may actually be a binary system which in astronomy is a common occurrence.Which them eventually led me to find you. I actually wanted to post to ask the forum about a couple of things. I am having a change come over me which has come in increments through my life after various severe health issues and near death experiences. Being raised LDS it is not a reach to "believe" in spirits and "supra natural". I grew up on the stories of my grandmothers' and the many spiritual gifts they had given to them that helped keep them and their family safe. Now for me I am becoming sensitive to changes and I know I can't be the only one that is changing. I am becoming more aware and developing new gifts at an alarming rate. I also have had my first taste of the darker side and opposition of being able to interact on a spirit level. Though it is off from my question if you would like or if it fits into any forum I would be happy to share in greater detail what has been going on. To sum it up. It has just made me even more in awe at the greatness of the Lord and I see his hand in all things. I want to ask if there are others willing to talk with me about the changes in the way the earth feels. Either in vibration/frequency or in any other perceptible way to them. I also want to ask about the book of Enoch. Please forgive me if this has been discussed. I scanned past blogs but may have missed it. Do you know what the official current stance is on this work? What do you think of it. I find it compelling for the fact that what has been happening to me is coming full circle and then I stumble upon this book and it has in it many of the ideas I have been introduced to and given knowledge of through the spirit. I am not for sure what it all means for I am sure I am not done yet. I feel as if I am reading a book and skipping through it. Not in order and only pieces. Trying all the while to figure out if I am reading a comedy, drama, action, or crazy sci-fi/fantasy book! I get impatient and want to skip to the end and read the ending but I have not recieved those pages. OK I know stupid analogy!..its just the mental image I get! I am curious what is known about it by your forum and if there are any other works that are similar. I also had a really creepy incident with my computer. Have you ever heard of a being trying to get you to open up a portal to a not so good place through sending you odd "formulas" during live chat until you either repeat it in your head or aloud, like someone from behind a door shouting what the lock combination is to you on the outside? All this while not knowing really what it is they are doing? I am not making it up, honestly. I am asking sincerely. I would love to hear any comments from anyone. Please don't waste your time if it is just to bash. I may sound a little off to a lot but I am sincere. I am looking forward to your comments and appreciate varied opinions. Best wishes, Shelly

Gathering Israel was the topic in sunday school this past sunday, and this verse really stood out to me after reading your post. D&C 110: 11. which reads: After this vision closed, the heavens were again opened unto us; and Moses appeared before us, and committed unto us the keys of the gathering of Israel from the four parts of the earth, and the leading of the ten tribes from the land of the north.
Correct me if I am wrong please. But it seems to separate the two. Israel from the four parts of the earth. And the leading of the ten tribes from the north. It also seems to say that the ten tribes( at least at the time when this revelation was given to Joseph Smith) are still together in this land of the North. Whether that land be lands on this earth, or another planet that at sometime was north of the earth, I don't know.

The hollow earth....Sorry I don't have time to write a long comment but yeah.....the ten tribes could be inside the earth. Google it, youtube have some videos on this theory. ...Peace. Nat from New Zealand :)

Hi Natalie,

Nah, I don't go in for the hollow earth stuff. I know they do over at LDS Anarchy but after researcing it I am convinced that it is both bad science and a hoax that is being perpetuated. As we read in the introduction to the Wikipedia article:

Hollow Earth is a belief that the planet Earth has a hollow interior and, possibly, a habitable inner surface. The hypothesis of a Hollow Earth has long been contradicted by overwhelming evidence, as well as by the modern understanding of planet formation, and the scientific community now dismisses the notion as pseudoscience. The concept of a hollow Earth has recurred as a premise for adventure fiction, and also features in some conspiracy theory and folklore.

That's about how I feel about it. On the other hand, I believe that the Ten tribes are indeed on a planet somewhere in our universe, possibly on their way to our solar system right now. I hear bells going off in some of your minds. Tim's lost it you may say. Well, I confess that it is an unusual belief, but the quote in the essay above and the quotes in this essay are what cause me to believe this.

An interesting idea, why would facsimile 2 of the PGP name several planets Enish-go-on-dosh, for example. Perhaps they are names of the Tribal planets? Hmmm

I would respectfully suggest that the idea that the 10 tribes are on another planet or gathered in the north, or in some other secret place is not true.
In His book, A New Witness for the Articles of Faith [Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1985], p 515Elder Bruce R. McConkie said:
"There is something mysterious and fascinating about believing the Ten Tribes are behind an iceberg somewhere in the land of the north, or that they are on some distant planet that will one day join itself with the earth, or that the tribe of Dan is in Denmark, the tribe of Reuben in Russia, and so forth. A common cliché asserts: "If we knew where the Lost Tribes were, they would not be lost." True it is that they are lost from the knowledge of the world; they are not seen and recognized as the kingdom they once were; but in general terms, their whereabouts is known. They are scattered in all the nations of the earth, primarily in the nations north of the lands of their first inheritance."

"...Many of these ideas, though true when properly interpreted, give a wholly false view of what is to be when they are simply paraphrased from the scriptures. In the literal sense of the word, the Ten Tribes will not return with armies and trumpets and banners; with the ice flowing down at their presence; on a highway spanning oceans and continents over which their legions shall march in regal majesty. Their return will be marvelous, with miracles attending. They will tread the highway of righteousness, and it will be as though a nation had been born in a day, because the wicked will have been destroyed and the Lord himself will be reigning on earth. The return of the Ten Tribes is, of course, a Millennial event."

From the Bible, we learn that Israel was scattered throughout the earth during periods of wickedness. The "lost" tribes are simply those who no longer know they are of Israel.

The tribe of Ephraim, for example, is largely responsible for the gathering of Israel to the banner of the Lord in the latter days. But unless you have latter-day revelation, you would not even know your lineage is of Ephraim.

None of the tribes have been taken off planet. They just don't know their heritage and that they are of the House of Jacob.

It's interesting to note, though, that the entire City of Enoch was taken into the Lord's bosom. In this case, I think we can safely assume those people are abiding on another planet.

Russ and Twitterpated: Thanks so much for adding your comments. I have responded to your thoughtful quotes with a new essay on the subject that can be found on my current blog here:

It came from behind the sun
That planet with wings is indeed returning, but the 10 tribes never left this planet.

They have been under a decree of separation from G-d in a sense for 2730 years up until last Yom Kippur (Oct 10-11, 2009), which seems to have ended the times of the financial power of the Gentiles.

Venture capital is being concentrated in Israel now..

They began returning to Israel a few years ago in the order that they left, Mannasseh first.

The Nephilim are on that planet. They have been in our skies abducting people, claiing to be The Great I AM, just as they did in The Days of Noach.

Now is the days of The Son of Man.

I have long been sceptical of Nibiru's return, but as an amateur astronomer, I know optical evidence when I see it.

Get ready.

The Lost Ten Tribes are indeed Lost to the world at this time. It seems like they are on another planet to me. There have been reports that they are under the north pole in a hollow area. The scriptures say they will come from the North Countries, which could mean that the land mass that they were on will be put down back on the earth in the north countries where from there they will migrate across this bridge. The city of Enoch is another similar example which will be brought back before the lords coming or somewhere around that time. There are quotes that the Prophet Joseph Smith said that the city of Enoch will be place in the area that is currently the Gulf of Mexico to Join up with the current continent or land.

I have seen some quotes that have said that the lost 10 tribes are not currently residing on this earth which I believe to be true.I believe Joseph Smith and some other apostles explained that they were on another sphere not on the earth.

Many people argue that the lost ten tribes are here already but scattered throughout the world in different countries. It is true there are some from the lost tribes scattered throughout the countries, however this is because of the following: When the lost tribes where lead away, there were some that left the main body and intermingled with other nations of this world. The same can be said for the saints. When the saints came to Salt Lake City, there were some that did not come here or stay but along the journey went elsewhere to other states such as California, to name a few.

We also know that the lost ten tribes were visited by Christ after he visited the Nephites as commanded by his father. If the lost ten tribes were in Russia, China or somewhere else in the world we would have known from these countries writings of the visit of Christ. However these countries or other countries around the world have no such record of the visit of Christ. It would be safe to conclude that they are not the 10 tribes. You may find some scattered in these different countries (as individuals may have broken off from the main body), but you will not find the whole main body of the lost ten tribes.

Also we know that the lost ten tribes will come with the following:

a. great technology
b. Leaders and prophets
c. Their sacred records (which should include the visit of Christ
when he was commanded to visit them by way of his father as stated in the book of Mormon)

Thus it would be safe to say a missionary in Sweden will not baptize a prophet of the lost ten tribes with a record of engraven plates in his basement.

A leader of prophet of the lost 10 tribes will always be with the main body as to fufill his commitment to Heavenly Father as it has always been since the beginning of time, that is a prophet is there to guide the people and is with his followers as opposed to being alone by himself.

I believe that some of the tribes are on another planet. At this point in my learning curve anything is possible through faith in the lord.

I also believe, and hear me out I know it sounds outlandish at the onset but I believe the earth is hollow. With Great concave holes at the north and south poleswhere gravity and water curve inward.

Consider a tennis ball with 2 holes the size of dimes cut in the top and bottom. Now consider the earth this same model. To lay some of the physics aspects to rest, I am under the impression that gravity is not a single point at the very center of earth's roundness but rather is a spherical line in the center of the earth's shell-like crust. imagine if a tennis ball had its own gravity but the source of the gravity did not originate from the center point but rather the middle of the rubber where the mass is.

Now with this in mind, there would be other continents and oceans on the interior curvature of the earth whose gravity would pull the inhabitants toward the earth still (they would not float) because gravity is pulling towards the mass of the earth which is its crust shell.

I also believe there is a small "sun" or star at the very center of earth. I think this because of an account by the name of Olaf Jensen who journeyed into the concave shape of the pole and visited the inside of the planet where people also reside. He calls the sun "the smoky god" because it is dimmer and far less intense than our surface sun.

Im saying all this basically because I think the inner earth area is where some of the lost tribes migrated to thousands of years ago. And they live in harmony with the races that were already there.
The Lost 10 Tribes are in Russia and that part of the world. They said that in General conference as early as 1929. It has been confirmed by the patriarchal blessings of people from that area. All 13 tribes have been found. They are not in space, but here. Not lost, they have just forgotten who they are. Check out Feb 2014 Liahona for more information on it.
